When nineteen-year-old Phyllis Hawkins learns of the marriage that her father arranged for her, she feels relegated to a loveless, hopeless, future. She flees her home on the farm and goes to the city to fend for herself. After facing many difficulties and disappointments, she is able to make a better life for herself. She overcomes the poverty and ignorance that once stalked her path. However, the better life costs her some rash vows.
